Question 1

Does the battery warranty transfer?

Accepted Answer

Battery warranties usually last longer than the basic warranty and often transfer to the next owner. Check the terms for the make using the VIN.

Question 2

What is a title brand?

Accepted Answer

A note on the title showing the car had a major event, such as being declared salvage, rebuilt or flood-damaged. Brands affect value and insurability, so check the history before you buy.

Question 3

How do I check a car's history?

Accepted Answer

Run a vehicle history report on the VIN. The government's NMVTIS program lists approved report providers at vehiclehistory.gov.

Question 4

Should I get a pre-purchase inspection?

Accepted Answer

Yes. An independent mechanic can spot problems a test drive won't reveal. For specialty cars, choose a shop that knows the make.

Question 5

How do I check for recalls?

Accepted Answer

Enter the VIN on the NHTSA recall lookup at nhtsa.gov to see open safety recalls.

Question 6

What paperwork do I need?

Accepted Answer

The signed title, a bill of sale and, if there was a loan, a lien release. Requirements vary, so check with your state's motor vehicle agency.
